How often do you come to a medical clinic and have little idea about what is and isn’t covered by Medicare. Like many Australians, knowing what Medicare rebates apply to you is important so you can make informed decisions and not be left with unanticipated costs.
Deakin University is conducting a study to gain knowledge on patients’ understanding of Medicare and Medicare rebates, pertaining to general practice. In particular, understanding around cost of general practice care and how Medicare rebates are allocated. There is an absence of literature about this issue and it is anticipated results may help identify where gaps in understanding regarding Medicare rebates exist. This is important to not only improve understanding, but to create a simple system that is equitable and allows improved access to care. Findings may help inform and provide a base for political discourse around Medicare funding and appropriate remuneration for GP consultations.
