Women have a range birth control method available; the pill, implanon or IUD to name a few – choosing the best method is a very personal decision.
One popular contraceptive method is an Intra Uterine Device or IUD. IUDs are a convenient form of contraception; they are safe and highly effective. Two different types of IUDs are most commonly used – Hormonal (trade name Mirena or Kyleena) and Copper.
Hormonal IUD works with hormones so is effective for managing problematic periods.
Copper IUDs do not affect hormones but still provide an effective form of contraception.
Kardinia Health offer IUD insertions to patients, all patients are offered pain relief for the insertion procedure. There is a fee for the IUD service as this is not covered by Medicare.
The IUD consult is completed over 3 separate appointments at Kardinia Health these appointments are not usually made for the same day – the initial consult with GP, followed by the procedure and 6-week post checkup.
Not all doctors at Kardinia Health perform IUD insertions, speak with reception when making your booking to confirm which GPs perform the IUD procedure.
The first appointment is a 30min pre-consult, this allows time to have a chat with the doctor and receive information regarding the IUD and the process.
The second appointment is for the insertion of the IUD, allow 30-60minutes for the procedure. All patients are offered pain relief for the insertion procedure.
This appointment is followed by a check 6 weeks after insertion to check position, address any concerns or questions you may have.
The IUD remains inside the uterus for up to 5yrs before replacement is required. The removal process is quite simple and can be completed within a standard consultation.
