Chlamydia is one of the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Victoria and across Australia. It’s highly treatable, but if left undetected, it can lead to serious long-term health issues. That’s why regular sexual health check-ups are so important.
At our Geelong medical centre, Kardinia Health, we offer confidential, inclusive, and expert care through our sexual health clinic, with onsite Chlamydia treatment and a wide range of STI services. Our clinic is proud to partner with Melbourne Sexual Health Centre as part of a broader Victorian Government initiative to improve access to STI care across the region.
Chlamydia is often called a “silent” infection because most people don’t experience any symptoms, especially in the early stages. But without treatment, it can lead to serious long-term health complications, particularly for women. According to Victoria Womens Health Atlas report, in 2024 alone, over 24,000 cases of chlamydia were reported in Victoria, highlighting how common the infection remains across the state for women.
Untreated chlamydia can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes, causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can lead to chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. The damage caused is often irreversible, which is why early detection is so critical. Even a single untreated infection can increase future risk.
For Men
While long-term complications are less common in men, they can still occur. Chlamydia may cause epididymitis (inflammation of the tubes near the testicles), leading to pain, swelling, and potentially infertility. It can also increase susceptibility to other STIs, including HIV.
